Rep. John Shimkus tells the US House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment that the Bible tells us God won’t destroy the Earth. So no need to worry about global warming!
Wow.
via The Daily Dish.
This makes me so angry! This is not Christianity!
First of all, the context is after the flood. This passage, just like the rainbow, is a confirmation that there won’t be another flood like this, not a proclamation that everything will be hunky-dory.
Secondly, the fact that God decides when ‘the earth will end’ doesn’t mean that man won’t harm the earth. If ‘every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood’, then wouldn’t man be pretty fricking good at destroying creation? Nature as God created it is pretty good at recovering if we leave it alone, but our activities seem make a lot of recovering necessary.
And in addition to those things, I invite the Congressman from Illinois to read Genesis 1:26 and to consider the responsibilities that go along with ruling. As a member of Congress, he should know a thing or two about responsibility (at least I hope). If Mr. Shimkus is, in fact, a Christian, then protecting the environment should be a priority for him; otherwise, he is degrading a gift given to him by a God he says he loves. Would you throw away a present from your significant other? If he does love God, then this love should manifest itself in a love for His creation.
The economic consequences of dealing with climate change may be difficult, but don’t try to use the Bible as a way to shirk responsibility.
